Applying for Original Medicare in Florida — What You Need to Know

Applying for Original Medicare (Parts A and B) in Florida doesn't have to be complicated. This guide walks you through every step — who needs to apply, when to apply, how to apply, and what happens next.

If you'd prefer to have someone guide you through the process, our licensed Medicare agents at South Florida Insurance Brokers provide free Medicare application assistance throughout Florida. Contact us or call (786) 303-8065.

First — check if you need to apply. If you're already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits when you turn 65, you'll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. You'll receive your Medicare card in the mail about 3 months before your 65th birthday. If you're not receiving these benefits, you must actively apply.

What is Original Medicare?

Original Medicare consists of two parts:

  • Medicare Part A — Hospital Insurance: Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Free for most people who've worked 40+ quarters.
  • Medicare Part B — Medical Insurance: Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Standard 2026 premium: $185/month.

Original Medicare covers about 80% of healthcare costs — leaving you responsible for copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. Most Florida residents add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or switch to Medicare Advantage to cover these gaps.

⚠️ Important: Apply During Your Enrollment Window

Missing your Initial Enrollment Period without qualifying employer coverage can result in permanent late enrollment penalties. Read our Turning 65 Medicare guide for full enrollment timeline details.
