Turning 65 and Medicare in Florida — What You Need to Know
Turning 65 is one of the most important healthcare milestones of your life. For most Florida residents, it means you’re now eligible for Medicare — and you have a limited window to enroll without facing lifetime penalties.
The good news: you don’t have to figure this out alone. At South Florida Insurance Brokers, our licensed Medicare agents have guided thousands of Florida residents through their first Medicare enrollment since 2002 — at absolutely no cost to you.
This guide walks you through everything: when to enroll, which plan to choose, what mistakes to avoid, and how to get expert help. Check our Medicare eligibility page for detailed qualification rules. If you have questions at any point, contact us or call (786) 303-8065.
If you don’t enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), you may face a permanent late enrollment penalty — added to your monthly premium for life. Don’t miss your window. Call us if you’re unsure when yours is.
Your Medicare Enrollment Timeline — Month by Month
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window that surrounds your 65th birthday. Here’s exactly when it opens and closes:
3 Months Before Your Birthday — Enrollment Window Opens
Your IEP starts 3 months before your birthday month. Enrolling now means coverage starts on the 1st of your birthday month — no gaps, no delays. This is the ideal time to enroll. Call us to get started.
Your Birthday Month
You can still enroll, but coverage may be delayed by 1 month. If your birthday is the 1st of the month, your IEP starts the month prior.
3 Months After — Last Chance
You have 3 months after your birthday month to enroll. However, coverage will be delayed. After this window closes, you’ll need a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or face penalties when you eventually enroll.
If you or your spouse are still working with employer health insurance, you may be able to delay Medicare enrollment without penalty. Rules are complex — call us at (786) 303-8065 and we’ll clarify your specific situation in minutes.
Which Medicare Plan Should You Choose in Florida?
Once enrolled in Medicare, the next decision is which type of coverage fits your situation best. There are two main paths — and the right choice depends on your health, doctors, budget, and lifestyle.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare combining hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage — usually with $0 monthly premiums but network restrictions.
Best for: Healthy seniors wanting low premiums who don’t mind staying in a network.
Learn more about Medicare Advantage →Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Works alongside Original Medicare to cover the gaps — copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. Plan G is the most popular Florida option for 2026.
Best for: Seniors wanting predictable costs and freedom to see any Medicare doctor nationwide.
Compare Medigap plans →Medicare Part D
Standalone prescription drug plan working with Original Medicare and Medigap. Skipping Part D when eligible can result in a lifetime penalty — even if you don’t take many medications now.
Not sure which is right for you? That’s exactly what we help with. Our licensed agents compare every plan available in your Florida zip code and recommend only what fits your situation — at no cost.

5 Medicare Mistakes Florida Seniors Make When Turning 65
- Missing the Initial Enrollment Period — A 10% Part B penalty applies for every 12 months you delay without qualifying coverage. It’s permanent. Call us before your window closes.
- Skipping Part D because “you don’t take many medications” — If you don’t enroll in Part D when first eligible, you’ll pay a late penalty when you do enroll — for life.
- Choosing a plan without checking your doctors — Medicare Advantage plans have networks. If your doctor isn’t in-network, you’ll pay out-of-pocket.
- Not comparing plans annually — Plans change every year. We review your plan every Annual Enrollment Period — free — to make sure it’s still the best option.
- Going it alone without a broker — Medicare.gov only shows Original Medicare. An independent broker like SFIB shows you every option — and it costs you nothing.
